I was introduced to the “beautiful game” in 1976, at the age of 6 and consider myself lucky to have lived in a place where they had organized female youth soccer leagues. I guess I had some talent because at 11 years old I made our towns girls U12 travel team. I can’t express the joy I felt to have made that team and from that moment forward I was determined to focus on improving my skills so that one day I would earn a college soccer scholarship. That college soccer scholarship became a reality in 1989 when I was awarded a soccer scholarship to attend the University of Denver. Yes, I worked extremely hard for that scholarship, but it would not have happened without the support of a travel coach of mine who recognized that I had talent and helped get me to practices, games and even covered my fees at certain times. Without his help I truly don’t believe I would have been able to continue playing soccer and honestly don’t know the trajectory my life would have taken.
Soccer has been such an integral part of my life for the past 45 years that I honestly don’t remember a time without it. This brings me to 2012 when I was getting frustrated with trying to find proper fitting soccer shorts and socks for my 4 kids, 3 of which are girls. It was then that I decided to start, Kick Like A Girl, Inc., a soccer apparel company that is dedicated to uniting the female soccer community through our apparel and outreach. Like many of you, we are pushing forward every day to be the best versions of ourselves and KLG will continue to push forward to bring you a brand that continues to evolve and unites the female soccer community.
